Funeral of King Michael of Romania

On December 16th, members of the Romanian Royal Family, foreign royalty, and heads of state attended King Michael of Romania's State Funeral. King Michael died on December 5th, at the age of 96, in Switzerland. Despite the fact that he hasn't been the reigning Head of State since 1947, the Government is holding a State Funeral for the late King, as part of Romania's efforts to grant the Royal Family Official Status.

The late King’s body laid in State in the Hall of Honour at Peles Castle for a day after arriving in Romania on December 13th, before being transported to the Throne Hall of the Royal Palace in Bucharest for the public to pay their respects until the day of the Funeral.

After a brief religious service in the Royal Palace’s Throne Hall, the casket was deposited in the Royal Palace Square for a military and religious ceremony on December 16th. The funeral cortege then proceeded from the Square to the Patriarchal Cathedral. Following the Cathedral’s Funeral Mass, the funeral cortege moved to Bucharest’s Baneasa Royal Railway Station, from where they journeyed to Curtea de Arges and to the Curtea de Arges Cathedral. The Late King Michael’s coffin was placed on a catafalque in the Cathedral, followed by a brief religious service and a funeral procession from the Cathedral to the New Episcopal and Royal Cathedral for his private burial.
