Skopje

From here I drive straight to Skopje in time to meet the president of Macedonia upon my arrival and shoot a religious procession the very next day.

From Skopje I will only mention two things. The megalomania of many Macedonians I know I always believed was just a coincidence. After visiting Skopje I can see it’s a national strategy, the very essence of their country brand. Some Architect thought and actually sold the idea that the best way to honor great ancestors is to dedicate them colossal statues. And as you will discover for yourselves if you visit, buildings to match the blown out of proportion statues. I never seen anything more grotesques with the exception of the Peoples House built by the former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. In a nutshell, Skopje would look wired even in Roman times. Yet, as a tourist, Skopje has something to offer, even if it is “The Romanesque city of Gulliver for the modern Lilliput traveller’, unlike Bucharest “The Grey CIty”.

Secondly, this is more like a word of caution. Always remember this is a non EU country. In many ways it’s still like Romania coming out the communist era. Taking pictures of Guvernamental buildings can trigger police questionings.

By Friday late night, I was back in Bucharest. A power tour of 4 Balkan capitals in 6 days.
