Despite a lack of interest from local and international publications, most of my work since 2010 has revolved around the Roma people. For five years I extensively covered the abuses against the Roma community in Baia Mare, a city in northern Romania. This body of work became the reference material for Amnesty International (used in the 2011 and 2012 country reports) and it was used as evidence in court by the National Council Against Discrimination (the exclusion wall built by the local authorities was declared an act of segregation at the end of 2013).
For months, I was the only person there to document it. My presence, as recognised by the community (video testimony of the people in the Amnesty International report), prevented the demolition of Craica, a makeshift Roma settlement, despite the promises to do so which the mayor had made during the 2012 electoral campaign. In 2012, I suggested that AI team up with a PR agency to launch its first educational campaign on human rights.
