BUCHAREST, ROMANIA Ð SEPTEMBER 17: Around 25 Romanian families of Roma origins were forcibly evicted from a formerly nationalized building whose property rights have been restored to their rightful owners, and thrown on the streets of the Romanian capital, Bucharest on September 17, 2014, after refusing the temporary shelters involving women and children living separate from men, offered by the authorities. The activity of providing housing focuses mainly on providing social housing for evicted tenants in previous years. According to the list of criteria developed by local authorities (as responsibility for providing social housing rests with local authorities), it is clear that the Roma as a group are excluded from eligibility to social housing, and are not the main beneficiaries of social housing provisions as a result.
Prior to the drafting of the current Romanian NRIS (2008), the Romanian government had started discussing and developing (mostly as the result of NGOsÕ advocacy efforts) a new draft law on housing, which included a special section on eligibility criteria for accessing social housing. However, nothing has come of this draft piece of law, and Roma living in poverty remain excluded from this form of social protection.

The activity of providing housing focuses mainly on providing social housing for evicted tenants in previous years. Prior to the drafting of the current Romanian NRIS (2008), the Romanian government had started discussing and developing (mostly as the result of NGOs’ advocacy efforts) a new draft law on housing, which included a special section on eligibility criteria for accessing social housing. However, nothing has come of this draft piece of law, and Roma living in poverty remain excluded from this form of social protection.
